Skill 20. Being Present

You only have one physical body so you can’t be in two places at the same moment. So where you decide to be at any given moment is really significant.

If you promise someone that you’ll attend a performance of theirs and you don’t come, that could be disappointing, if not hurtful. But if you are present, even if you’re the only one who came, smile broadly and applaud wildly. Your presence will be noticed, appreciated, and remembered.

You might not realize it, but your presence can shape the personality, character, and destiny of another person. The prisons are filled with inmates who never had the presence of a father, ever. There are thousands upon thousands of divorced women who longed for the presence of their husbands, only to have the longings fade after endless disappointments. And there are countless young women who are starved for the love of any man, because they never had the presence of a dad in the home.

Your presence matters. Choose carefully where you will devote your presence during this lifetime. And when you do show up, smile broadly and applaud wildly. You will make a difference in the lives of others.

Now return to the world and show up just like you promised.

Strength and honor.
